Lewes Through the Centuries

Founded in 1631 by Dutch settlers, Lewes (pronounced "Loo-iss") holds the distinction of being Delaware's first European settlement. Originally named Zwaanendael ("Swan Valley"), the town's strategic location at the mouth of Delaware Bay made it an important trading post and military outpost.

The Lewes Historical Society preserves dozens of original structures and artifacts that tell the story of this remarkable coastal community. Their collection includes everything from Native American artifacts to maritime treasures from the age of sail.

Did You Know?
Lewes was briefly bombarded by British ships during the War of 1812 after residents refused to provide supplies to the enemy navy. Cannonballs from this encounter are still displayed at the Zwaanendael Museum.
